As the public environmental initiative Clean Arctic marks its fifth anniversary, large-scale clean-up efforts continue across Arctic regions - including Arkhangelsk Oblast, the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the Komi Republic, Chukotka and Yakutia.

A distinctive feature of the Clean Arctic project is that waste, scrap metal and other debris are removed not only from populated areas, but also from remote Arctic islands, former meteorological stations and abandoned military bases - places from which waste had often never been removed before.
In total, more than 400 tons of waste have been taken out of the Arctic over the past five years.
